A 1973 Triumph TR6 is which was last on the road in 1993 has already been entered into the Charterhouse auction of classic cars on Sunday 22nd April.
“It has been entered into the auction from a deceased estate and is only a two owner car having been purchased when it was just two years old.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “It was fully restored in 1992 but has remained in the its garage since 1993 until we recently collected it from amongst the lawn and garden tools!”
This late model fuel injected TR6 with a work hardtop has already sparked interest from collectors and enthusiasts and should have no difficulty in passing its modest estimate of £3,000-5,000.

Triumph is Top Trump at Charterhouse Auction

A Triumph TR3a is just one of the star cars in the Charterhouse auction of classic cars on Sunday 12th February.

“Triumph Motor Cars always evoke memories for everyone, but possibly none more so than the famous TR sports car range, and we are pleased to receive instructions to sell this beautiful original UK 1960 Triumph TR3a .” Commented Matthew Whitney. “Despite the doom and gloom there is around at the moment, and we have just had our best ever year for selling classic and vintage cars with an impressive total of over £700,000. Many of our clients prefer to have money in motors rather than sitting in the bank earning them little interest, with buyers often buying classic cars they enjoyed in their youth or possibly cars they aspired to when they were younger.”
The Triumph TR3a entered into the Charterhouse auction has been fully restored to a high standard by its owner. It is known as a matching numbers car whereby the car still retains the original engine and gearbox as it was supplied with new over 50 years ago. Since it has been it its current owners hands it has undergone a total restoration and is now finished in Triumph powder blue, is trimmed in blue leather, sits on chrome wire wheels, and the engine has been converted to run on unleaded fuel. Estimates at £15,000-18,000, the owner is selling as he gets more enjoyment out of restoring his cars rather than driving them.

Carefree Capri at Charterhouse

A Ford Capri, once a common sight on our roads and now rarely seen, is one of the many classic cars entered into the Charterhouse auction at The Royal Bath & West Showground on Sunday 12th February.
“This Ford Capri has bought by the vendor in Yeovil in 1979 when it was just two years old. For many years, it was his daily driver until he took it off the road after it nearly covering an amazing 250,000 miles!” Commented Matthew Whitney. “He then undertook a full restoration of the car using genuine Ford parts, but has hardly used the car subsequently.”
The Ford Capri was first launched in 1969, and the Capri going under the Charterhouse hammer is a Mark II 1600 GL finished in white with a black vinyl roof which was first registered in 1977 The last Capri rolled off the production line in 1986.

Clockwork Orange

A wonderful Compagnie Industrielle du Jouet (CIJ) Alfa Romeo P2 clockwork tin plate racing car has been consigned for the next Charterhouse Classic Car, Motorcycle and Automobilia auction at the Royal Bath and West Showground Shepton Mallet, on Sunday 12 February 2012.

'This rare clockwork model from the 1920s, which has been in the client's possession for 70 years, had pride of place on her bookcase. On one of our free home visits, I valued it as having an estimate of between £1,200 and £1,500,' commented Matthew Whitney. 'This particular P2 is in the most appealing original condition. It has beautifully patinated and faded Rosso coachwork, faux cracked leather seats, the correct cloverleaf decals and racing numbers. Models as original as this rarely come on to the market, and as such are highly prized by collectors.'

Also entered in the auction is a fully rebuilt 1976 Ford Capri 1600 GL, having been with the current owner since 1977, and driven for nearly 250,000 miles during that that time. In recent years, since the restoration, it has had a more pampered life, attending the odd classic car show and used for high days and holidays. Matthew continues 'Fords manufactured in the 1970s/80s are becoming increasingly popular with enthusiasts, with prices rising accordingly. This Capri is ideally placed for selling, as the auction is being held in conjunction with the
Footman James Ford Show and Great Western Autojumble.'

Topless Time at Charterhouse

The Charterhouse July auction of classic cars has a great selection of convertibles cars ready to be enjoyed during the summer months.

“This sale is held in the beautiful parkland setting at Sherborne Castle where we put up a large marquee overlooking the lake, and is in conjunction with the very popular Classic and Supercar Show held on the same day.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “The classic car market is particularly buoyant at present and we have had high prices achieved at our last specialist auction whiich was held at The Royal Bath & West Showground,”

Of the many entries already confirmed for the Charterhouse sale, there are a good number of cars looking to provide their new owners with fun open top motoring including a 1927 Rolls Royce open tourer. The body was built by Park Ward in 1927 being one of the first years of the 20/25. It has been in its current ownership since 1973 and was bought with its believed low mileage of 39,000. During it’s nearly 40 years of ownership it has only put on another 11,000 miles! It is estimated to sell for £40,000-45,000.

Also in the sale is an Austin Healey3000 MkII which has been fully restored with a bare metal respray, leather interior and chrome wire wheel s at £28,000-32,000, a rare 1955 Ford Zephyr convertible with an hydraulic electric hood which was previous owned by Neil Tee, the chairman of Consul Zephyr Owners Club at £12,000-15,000, a 1974 Jaguar E Type with 52,000 from new and owned for over 20 years, chrome wires, and a 1959 MGA Roadster, upgraded with MGB engine, unleaded head, 3 branch exhaust 1 ¾ in SU carbs for £15,000-17000.

Gullwing looks to fly at Charterhouse Car Auction

The Charterhouse auction of classic cars and automobilia at Sherborne Castle on Sunday 17th July includes an ultra rare Ostermeier Mercedes 300SL Gullwing.

“We have had a great start to the year with our classic car auctions and have now been instructed to sell this Mercedes Gullwing re-creation at our next auction in the wonderful grounds of Sherborne Castle” Commented Matthew Whitney. “It has been consigned for sale by a West Country collector and has been much admired at recent outings, with the only real giveaway being the tax disc shows the car is not tax exempt. The quality of the Ostermeier re-creations is legendary and it even comes complete

with custom made fitted luggage in red leather matching the interior of the car.”

This Ostermeier 300SL Gullwing is just one of about 250 made and although it is estimated at £150,000-180,000, is offered for sale at a fraction of the cost of an original 300SL Gullwing. Built in 1998 it comes with full Mercedes history and speedometer records just 4,700 kms from new. 100 Mile an Hour Man

Charterhouse Auctioneers have been instructed to sell the highly important collection of photographs, trophies, Brooklands badges and ephemera belonging to the great late Claude F Temple, the motorcycle manufacturer, Brooklands racer and motorcycle speed world record holder. The collection is expected to sell for over £5,000 when it goes under the hammer.

“Rarely do such historically important motorcycle items appear on the open market, as the majority is held by museums, institutions or is in private collections.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “He was the first person to cover 100 miles in less than one hour on a motorcycle at Montlhery in 1924, when he covered 100 miles in 58 minutes and 50.6 seconds which is equivalent to 101.982 mph. Just a couple of years later, in 1926, he became the fastest man on two wheels when he took the world speed record on a motorcycle at 121.3 mph. This is a fantastic collection from a golden age of motorcycles, when men were men and health and safety had not been invented.”

This is the first time the collection has appeared on the open market. It comes direct from a close family friend who lives on the Isle of Man, home of the famous motorcycle races. The collection will be auctioned at the Footman James 32nd Bristol Classic Car Show on Sunday 17th April together with other interesting items of automobilia, motorcycles, vintage and classic cars, including a 1948 Bentley Mk VI Special, at £48,000 – 52,000 and a 1960 Jaguar Mk II 2.4 litre manual overdrive saloon, with only three owners all living within 10 miles of each other in Devon estimated at £10,000 -12,000. Perhaps more fittingly however, there is monster of a motorcycle in the form of a Suzuki GSX-R 1000. This has been extensively modified by Harris Racing as their show bike and demonstrator. Painted in Barry Sheene racing colours, this bike is capable of over 200 mph, and estimated at £7,500-9,000.

One of the motor industries icon, a Jaguar E Type coupe, is included in the Charterhouse auction of classic cars on Sunday 13th February held at The Royal Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet.

“We have sold many E Types over the years, but this one is a little more special than most, having covered just over 4,000 miles since new. It is a Somerset registered car, having been bought by a Commander at Yeovilton in 1972. I can only assume that the Commander served abroad for some time which could explain the lack of use of such an iconic motor car. “Commented Matthew Whitney”. When the Commander sold the car, it remained locally and the purchaser then passed the car onto his son. At this point, the car had about 3,000 miles put on it and was then laid up in a barn until the Charterhouse vendor went to buy a tractor but spotted the car and bought it instead!”

The car has subsequently undergone a total nut and bolt restoration, and a change in colour from maroon to metallic ice blue which is still a Jaguar colour. As the car has been dry stored for most of its life, it was very straight forward to dismantle the car, with only two bolts shearing in the process. The car was then rebuilt rather than restored even having a complete new cream leather interior. This E Type is now presented in a better than new condition and is so clean you could eat your dinner off it! Not unsurprisingly, the cost of parts alone came to over £27,000 and combined with 6 months of labour to be added on top, it is estimated at £32,000-35,000. This “new” E Type is ready to celebrate 50th anniversary of the E Type and will no doubt give the new owner miles of smiles.

Star Car Vanden Plas

A 1959 Austin A105 Vanden Plas is one of the star cars at the Charterhouse auction of classic cars on Sunday 13th February held at The Royal Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet.

“The name Vanden Plas has always been synonymous with great motor cars, having coach built cars for Rolls Royce, Bentley and other leading manufacturers.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “However, the involvement of Vanden Plas in the A105 is historically important as it was the first time a mass produced Austin was upgraded by Vanden Plas. The car would leave the Austin factory and be delivered to the Vanden Plas coachworks at Kingsbury, London, where the cars would receive leather upholstery, cloth headlining and walnut trim.”

This rare classic car, just one of only 500 made, with only 5 believed remaining running on the road, has been owned by the Somerset vendor since 1968. Fitted with a 3 litre straight six engine coupled to a floor change four speed gearbox with overdrive, it would be propelled from 0-60 mph a fraction over 15 seconds when new!

To kick start the New Year, Charterhouse will be selling a large Shell collection in their Classic Car, Motorcycle and Automobilia auction on Sunday 13th February at The Footman James Restoration Show.

Consigned from a Somerset fuel suppliers, the collection has been amassed over the last 50 years and includes many enamel signs, petrol pump globes, prints, advertising and related items estimated to sell for several thousands of pounds.

“It is a comprehensive collection, the likes of which rarely come to the market.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “It’s quite amazing to think that they have been in only one family ownership for the past several decades and will now go to only their second owner.”

Also entered in this sale is a 1973 Ford Escort Mexico Historic Group 2 rally car from a Cornish client. This has been fully rebuilt from a bare shell with receipts of over £60,000 and if offered for auction at a fraction of the re-build cost. This will be a turn key solution for any budding competitor in historic rallying and would enable them to compete immediately without having to go through the expense of having to source and rebuild a similar car.

The monster Vauxhall Magnum V8 racer £25,000-35,000
The Charterhouse autumn auction programme offers collectors and dealers of model cars and classic cars a great opportunity to add valuable and rare items into their garages and cabinets. First up on Thursday 21st October is a sale devoted to model vehicles and trains, which is then followed on Sunday 7th October with a sale of classic cars at The Royal Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet.

“We have been instructed to sell a huge selection of Dinky, Corgi and other models from a Dorset client. There are probably somewhere in the region of over 2,000 models, some of which are play worn and some of which are in their original boxes, it is the largest collection I have seen for several years.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “This auction is then followed by our classic car sale which includes one of the best selection of vehicles we have had the please to be instructed to sell including a 1919 Model T Ford through to a very special Vauxhall Magnum known as The John Pope Special. This is far from standard and is fitted with a sanctioned Aston Martin V8 engine with Le Mans cylinder heads, bolted onto which are two massive turbo’s. It is quite a monster and was raced extensively in the early to mid 1970’s.”

Amongst the Dinky and Corgi cars there are some real little gems, There are motors from James Bond films, complete with rockets and other gadgets to Police cars with detailed engine bays and steering suspension, and with estimates from £50 up to a few hundred, there will be something for every collector. In the full size cars, there are several convertibles including an Austin Healey 3000, Morris Minor and Beetle convertibles, an Armstrong Siddley tourer and two well detailed and authentic replica cars in the shape of a Ferrari Daytona convertible and a Jaguar SS100 convertible, each being about the tenth of the cost of the real thing.

Top Marques at Charterhouse Classic Car Auction

The Charterhouse 18th July auction of classic and vintage cars at Sherborne Castle, Dorset looks to be another great success for this Dorset company with many top marque motors up for auction.

“We have covered many miles across the West Country advising clients on their classic cars such as vendor of a fine Rolls Royce series II Corniche Convertible.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “And now it appears summer is now well and truly upon us, this Corniche Convertible looks resplendant in red with a black leather interior piped in red and with an automatic hood. Powered by a fuel injected V8 engine with ABS it is just one of 1226 of the series made and looks certain to be a perennial favourite with buyers.”

Whilst this beautiful Rolls Royce is in fine condition, the same vendor has also decided to sell his Mk VI Bentley, but with a difference. The original engine blew up and is now replaced with a Daf lorry 8 litre 6 cylinder diesel engine! The vendor reports a 0-60 second sprint time of about 5 seconds, but not much speed after that! With plenty of torque on offer, the car would make either an excellent towing car for vintage racers or it will appeal for someone looking for a project they can improve on.

Also entered is a 1925 Gardner Town Coupe which has been owned by the vendor for ten years, at £18,000-22,000. Some twelve years younger, is a rare 1937 Morris GPO engineers van which is believed to be just one of three in existence and is up for £8,000-10,000. A 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL, registration number YRW 623L, chassis number 2285404, engine number 2285404, yellow with black vinyl roof and black coachlines and script. The BMW CSL (Coupé Sport Leicht) was the lightweight homologation version of the 3.0 CS. Utilising thinner gauge steel, bespoke aluminium panels (doors, bonnet & boot), slimmer glass and less sound deadening, this reduced the overall weight by 300 lbs compared to the standard CS coupé. This very rare lightweight coupé is one of 500 right hand drive examples, this being No 404. The specification and equipment levels were high with all-round independent suspension, Getrag 5-speed gearbox, 3003cc straight 6 engine with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection. The performance figures are still impressive by today's standards with 0-60 mph time of 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph when new. The current vendor purchased the CSL in 1981 and used it as his everyday transport until 1986. The coupé has been kept in dry storage since. The indicated 67,000 miles is believed to be genuine. The history file contains the last MOT dated November 1986, owner's handbook and various magazine articles. The CSL will now require careful recommissioning and localised restoration to retain the originality and should appeal to any BMW collector. V5, no current MOT or tax £3,000 - 5,000

A 1979 HONDA CB250N SUPERDREAM MOTORCYCLE, registration number YYE 679T, frame number CB250N2012571, engine number CB250NE201578, blue. This very original two owner motorcycle has covered a believed genuine 2,800 miles from new and the current vendor purchase it direct from the first owner. The air-cooled over head cam parallel twin Superdream has a 6-speed gearbox and a pair of bespoke panniers. The history file contains a workshop manual, owner's handbook, old MOT's, tax discs and manufacturer's hand tools. V5C, MOTed to May 2010 and tax £600 - 800

THE HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT ONE MILLIONTH MORRIS MINOR 1000 SALOON, registration number 1 MHU, chassis number M-A2S3/1000000, engine number 503889, originally 9M-U-H/504066, lilac. The millionth Morris Minor rolled off the No 1 assembly line at the giant Cowley Works on the 22nd December 1960. Its designer Alec Issigonis was there with other Nuffield organisation top brass to savour the success of a car which had captured the hearts of the British public. The publicity department played their part, issuing a press release on 4th January 1961 entitled The Morris Minor Million - a Great Engineering and Commercial Achievement, which went on to tell of the feat unique in the history of the British Motoring Industry i.e. the production of one million vehicles of a common design - the greatest British-made seller in any class. The Millionth Minor, one of 349 Specials produced, 318 were sold on the UK home market, 31 left-hand drive models were exported to North America and 9 to Europe. Based on a standard 1961 2-door saloon, the Millionth Specials were painted in eye-catching lilac. They received a luxurious white leather interior with black piping, white door cards, black carpets and grey sun visors, externally they bore extra chrome rings on the wheel trims and unique 1,000,000 badgeing.

The actual Millionth Minor was passed from the Nuffield Group publicity department to the National Union of Journalists on the 20th April 1961 for use in a National fund raising campaign in aid of the British Red Cross, and was subsequently raffled on National television. The lucky winner was a Miss Susan George from Wales, who was too young to drive at the time and it was subsequently sold to the local postman.

The Millionth Minor came to the attention of the current owner in 1970 when visiting his holiday home in Dyfed Wales, still going strong, although now painted red. In 1971 the car was involved in an accident when it slid into a ditch damaging the driver's side.

The current owner purchased the car soon after the accident and trailered it back to his Birmingham home. Two further house moves and two decades passed before restoration took place at Northbrook College in Worthing, where it received a full restoration by Derek Smith, a Senior Lecturer in Motor Vehicle Studies. There is a vast history file with the car within five document wallets containing receipts totalling approximately £15,000 for the restoration, various magazine and newspaper articles relating to the car, photographs of the rebuild, Heritage Certificate and old MOT's. The car has been dry stored in recent years due to pressure of work and has only covered a nominal mileage since the restoration. This is a unique opportunity to purchase an historically significant vehicle and a small piece of the British motoring history. RF60, V5, no current MOT, currently on SORN £18,000 - 22,000

A 1960 ROVER 80 P4, registration number 631 RPH, chassis number 645002463, engine number 645002776, green. The Rover 80 was introduced in 1960 and continued in production for two years until 1962, and had the 2286cc four cylinder engine mated to a Solex carburettor producing 77bhp when new. This three owner Rover 80 has covered a believed genuine 37,199 miles and has cream leather interior with walnut dashboard and door cappings, and a 4-speed gearbox with overdrive. The history file contains all MOTs, tax discs and some service history, the vendor informs us that he has known the two previous owners to verify the mileage. A 1977 TRIUMPH TR7 COUPÉ, registration number OTC 730R, chassis number ALG 14140A, engine number CG009632HEA, white. This time warp TR7 has had two registered keepers from new and covered a believed genuine 16,000 miles. The first lady owner sold it to the current vendor in 2000 and it has been part of a small private collection since. The current vendor has undertaken some preventative maintenance work including a new cylinder head gasket, radiator, tyres and a full service. This rare automatic coupé has red carpets, black vinyl and red tartan upholstered seats, radio/cassette and electric aerial. The history file contains a full service history with all old MOT's, original owner's handbook, and workshop manual. V5C, V5, MOT to May 2010, currently on SORN £3,000 - 3,500

A 1976 AUSTIN ALLEGRO 1500 VANDEN PLAS, registration number NYB 805P, chassis number VF4SJ-232183A, engine number 36544, Pageant Blue with gold coach lines. The luxury version of the Allegro was introduced in 1974 and continued in production until 1980 when manufacture ceased. This three owner Vanden Plas has covered a believed genuine 46,477 miles, and has a cream leather interior with walnut dashboard and door cappings, thick carpets, extra sound deadening and rear picnic tables (which were very unusual for a mass produced car from the 1970's). The history file contains the original Austin passport to service with eight stamps, old MOT's, tax discs, owner's handbook and some service history. The vendor informs us that he has known this Somerset registered Allegro from new (purchased from Bartletts of Wells) and the two previous owners to verify the mileage.
